“My hair is not growing.”

If you have 4C hair, there is a very good chance you have said this at least once.

You look at your hair today and compare it to a picture from six months ago. Same length. Maybe even shorter. You have tried oils, butters, shampoos, supplements, protective styles and almost every hair growth tip you have come across online. Yet somehow, that length you are expecting is not showing up.

But before you conclude that your hair is not growing, there is something important you need to understand.

Hair growth and length retention are not the same thing.

Your hair can be growing perfectly well from your scalp while you are losing that growth somewhere along the way.

So, if you have been wondering why your 4C hair seems stuck at the same length, here are seven things I want you to look at.

1. First, what do you actually mean when you say your hair is not growing?

Let’s start here because I think this is where a lot of the confusion begins.

Hair grows from the scalp. The hair follicle produces the strand and, as the strand continues to grow, it gets longer.

So when you say, “My hair is not growing,” what you are usually saying is, “I am not seeing my hair get longer.”

And those two things are not necessarily the same.

Your hair may be growing, but if you are constantly losing some of that new growth through breakage, your overall length may not change much.

For example, imagine your hair grows a certain amount over several months, but during that same period, the ends keep breaking off. You have technically grown the hair, but you are not keeping all of it.

That is length retention.

And honestly, I think this is one of the biggest mindset shifts we need to make when talking about 4C hair.

The question should not always be, “What will make my hair grow?”

Sometimes the better question is, “What is making me lose the length my hair is already growing?”

That question can completely change the way you approach your hair.

2. You may be dealing with too much breakage

If your hair is breaking as quickly as it is growing, you are going to struggle to see any significant increase in length.

Breakage simply means that the hair strand is breaking somewhere along its length.

This is different from shedding. A shed hair has naturally completed its growth cycle and comes out from the root. With breakage, you are losing a portion of the strand before its time.

Look at what you find when you detangle your hair.

Are you seeing lots of very short pieces?

Are your ends becoming thinner?

Does your hair seem to be getting shorter even though you have not had a haircut?

Those are things worth paying attention to.

Breakage can come from several places. Rough detangling. Excessive manipulation. Dryness. Tight hairstyles. Frequent heat. Damaged ends. Even the way you handle your hair when taking down a protective style.

And this is where it gets frustrating.

You could be doing everything you can to encourage growth from your scalp, but if you are constantly breaking the hair along the way, you will not see much length.

So before you start looking for another “hair growth oil,” find out why your hair is breaking in the first place.

3. Your hair may not be getting the conditioning it needs

I want to be careful with this one because “moisture” has become one of those words we throw around so much in the natural hair space that it can start to mean everything and nothing at the same time.

Your hair needs water and conditioning, but simply putting oil on your hair does not mean you have moisturised it.

If your hair constantly feels dry, rough, stiff or difficult to detangle, you need to look at your routine.

4C hair has a very tightly coiled structure. The natural oils produced by your scalp do not necessarily travel down the length of the strand as easily as they might with a straighter hair pattern.

This is one reason the lengths and ends of tightly coiled hair can need more attention.

And when the hair is constantly dry and difficult to manage, manipulation becomes harder.

Detangling becomes harder.

Styling becomes harder.

And that can mean more breakage.

This is why your wash day should not just be about getting your hair clean.

Your products should help you get your hair into a condition where you can actually handle it without unnecessarily stressing the strands.

That can mean using a good conditioner, leave-in conditioner and a deep conditioner that work for your hair. It can also mean learning what your hair actually responds well to instead of simply buying every product that says “moisturising” on the label.

4. You may be handling your hair too much or too roughly

Sometimes, the problem is not the product.

It is the handling.

How often are you combing your hair?

How are you detangling it?

Are you trying to pull a comb through a huge, tangled section because you are already late for work?

Please!!

Your hair does not need to be fought.

If you are constantly pulling, tugging, brushing, combing and restyling your hair, you are putting it through mechanical stress over and over again.

And it adds up.

This is why I encourage working in sections when detangling. Give the hair enough slip. Start from the ends and work your way up. If a knot is stubborn, loosen it instead of forcing your comb through it.

Also, be mindful of what happens when you take down hairstyles.

Sometimes we spend three weeks being gentle with our braids and then destroy all that progress during takedown because we are in a hurry.

Gentle hair care is not complicated.

A lot of the time, it is simply learning to stop doing unnecessary things to your hair.

5. Your ends may be the problem

Let’s talk about the ends because they are very easy to ignore.

Your ends are the oldest part of your hair.

They have been exposed to everything your hair has gone through. Washing. Detangling. Styling. Friction from your clothes and pillow. Sun. Heat. Manipulation. And everything else in between.

So naturally, they are more vulnerable.

If your ends are constantly splitting, tangling, thinning out or breaking, you cannot keep focusing only on what is happening at your scalp.

You need to look at the other end too.

And this is where trimming sometimes becomes necessary.

No, trimming your hair does not make it grow faster.

I need us to retire that idea.

Your hair growth comes from the scalp. What trimming can do is remove damaged portions of the hair and help you maintain healthier ends.

You also do not need to be obsessed with trimming every few weeks.

The point is to pay attention to the condition of your ends and deal with damage when it becomes necessary.

Because there is really no point gaining length at the top and losing it at the bottom.

6. Your “protective” style may not be protecting your hair

This is another one we need to talk about.

Just because a hairstyle is called a protective style does not automatically mean it is protecting your hair.

Braids can be protective.

Wigs can be protective.

Cornrows can be protective.

Twists can be protective.

But the hairstyle itself is not what makes it protective. How you wear and maintain it matters.

If your braids are so tight that you have a headache for three days, something is wrong.

If your edges are being pulled constantly, that is not protection.

If the extensions are extremely heavy, if the style is left in for too long, or if your takedown process involves ripping through tangled hair, you are creating unnecessary stress for your strands.

And please remember that putting your hair away does not mean your hair has stopped needing care.

Your scalp still needs attention.

Your hair still needs appropriate conditioning and moisture.

Your ends still need protection.

A protective style should make caring for your hair easier, not give you an excuse to forget about it completely.

7. Your routine may not be addressing the actual problem

This is where I want you to pause and look at your entire routine.

Not your favourite product.

Your routine.

What are you actually doing to your hair?

Are you cleansing your scalp regularly?

Are you conditioning?

Are you detangling gently?

Are you constantly changing products because someone on social media said something new?

Are you buying products because they are trending, or because they address something your hair actually needs?

Are you using ten different products but still have no idea what each one is doing?

Because having more products does not automatically mean you have better hair care.

Sometimes, you do not need another product.

You need to understand the products you already have and use them consistently.

And if you have a scalp issue, severe breakage, persistent thinning or anything else that does not seem normal, that is something to take seriously rather than trying to cover it up with another oil or butter.

There is no single product that can fix every hair problem.

Your hair needs a routine that makes sense for your hair.

So, is your 4C hair actually not growing?

Maybe.

But before you decide that your hair simply does not grow, look at what happens to the hair after it leaves your scalp.

Is it breaking?

Is it constantly dry and difficult to manage?

Are you handling it too roughly?

Are your ends damaged?

Are your protective styles actually causing tension?

Are you giving your hair consistent care?

Because the truth is simple:

Hair growth happens at the scalp. Length retention happens along the hair shaft.

If you want to see your hair get longer, you need to care about both.

And that means moving away from the constant search for a miracle growth product and paying more attention to how you actually care for your hair.

Understand your hair.

Pay attention to it.

Learn what it responds to.

And most importantly, learn to care for the hair you already have while you wait for the length you want.

That is what healthy hair care is really about.
